Cozy Country Bedroom

I really like this bedroom featured in Real Simple magazine. It's simple, feminine, and has a wonderful vintage feel to it. Today, I'm going to browse through all of the wonderful shops on Etsy to see if I can't find some items to closely recreate this look...

Landscape photographs and a nature-themed print reinforce the garden vibe.

Fromage, Queso, Fromaggio, Cheese

All who know me well know that I am a lover of all things cheese. I have never met a cheese that I did not savor, never passed up an opportunity to experience a new flavor of pressed curd. And the stinkier the better-the pungent smell of a strong Blue always gets my taste buds salivating. Today, a short blurb about my favorite food...

When serving cheese at a social event, there are many ways to present it. A nicely arranged cheese platter is sure to make your guests hover around the hors'devours table. Another great way to serve cheese is in a cheese cloche. These domes are great because you can present cheese beautifully while protecting it from unwanted buzzing pests, then use the cloche year round to display your favorite treasures.

There are many, many recipes where cheese just makes everything tastier. One of my favorites, for example, is Cheese Stuffed Figs. The recipe is as follows:
  • Quarter 12 figs, cutting three-quarters of the way down.
  • Stuff the figs with goat cheese (or whichever cheese is your favorite).
  • Roast in an oiled pan at 425° for 12 minutes, until softened.
  • Serve drizzled with warmed honey.
Easy and delicious!

Vintage Halloween Costume Idea: Audrey Hepburn

Every year starting in October, I rack my brain trying to figure out what I'm going to wear on October 31st. Being a girl on a budget, I try to put together a costume that is fun but that won't break the bank. By using a combination of items that you may already have on hand with a few vintage/thrift store finds, assembling the perfect Halloween costume is a sure thing.

The first thing that you need to find is a plain black dress. Every girl has a simple black number in her closet, right? Well if you don't, head down to your local thrift store and browse the racks, or check out some of these beauties available on Etsy...

Okay, now that you've found your dress, time to add a strand of pearls. Ask mom to borrow hers (don't lose them!), or purchase your own. Every girl should own her own set of pearls...

You're almost set! The finishing touch is the extra long cigarette holder that you MUST have for this costume. How did Audrey make smoking look so debutante? With this:

Now, sweep your hair into a high up-do, put on seven layers of mascara, and practice making your best doe eyes in the mirror. On Halloween night, you'll be the best dressed Old Hollywood starlet on the block ; )

"I believe in pink. I believe that laughing is the best calorie burner. I believe in kissing, kissing a lot. I believe in being strong when everything seems to be going wrong. I believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls. I believe that tomorrow is another day and I believe in miracles."

Easy Fancy Meal: Chicken Piccata and Broccoli Rabe with Apricots

Weather you're cooking for one or for a family of five, it can be difficult to find recipes that are both easy and palate pleasing. Today I'm going to share one of my favorite meals to cook, Chicken Piccata with a side of Broccoli Rabe with Apricots. Not only is this meal a crowd pleaser, but it's relatively quick and simple-not to mention pretty to look at....

Easy Chicken Piccata

Ingredients

  • 2-4 boneless, skinless chicken breast halves (1 1/2 pound total)
  • 2 Tbsp grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/3 cup flour
  • Salt and pepper
  • 4 Tbsp olive oil
  • 4 Tbsp butter
  • 1/2 cup chicken stock or dry white wine
  • 3 Tbsp lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup brined capers
  • 1/4 cup fresh chopped parsley
  • 1/2 cup fresh mushrooms
  • 1/4 cup chopped tomatoes
  • 20 fresh spinach leaves, stems trimmed

Method

1 Cut the chicken breast halves horizontally, butterflying them open. If the breast pieces you are working with are large, you may want to cut them each into two pieces. If the pieces are still thick after butterflying, put them between two pieces of plastic wrap and pound them with a meat hammer to 1/4-inch thickness.
2 Mix together the flour, salt, pepper, and grated Parmesan. Rinse the chicken pieces in water. Dredge them thoroughly in the flour mixture, until well coated.

3 Heat olive oil and 2 tablespoons of the butter in a large skillet on medium high heat. Add half of the chicken pieces, do not crowd the pan. Brown well on each side, about 3 minutes per side. Remove the chicken from the pan and reserve to a plate. Cook the other breasts in the same manner, remove from pan. Cover with aluminum foil and keep warm in the oven while you prepare the sauce.
4 Add the chicken stock (or white wine), lemon juice, and capers, mushrooms, spinach, and tomatoes to the pan. Use a spatula to scrape up the browned bits. Reduce the sauce by half. Whisk in the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter. Plate the chicken and serve with the sauce poured over the chicken. Sprinkle with parsley.
Serves 4.

Broccoli Rabe (shown with chicken breast)

    Ingredients

Directions

  1.  Heat the tablespoon of oil in a  skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Add the apricots, pine nuts, and garlic and cook, stirring, until the pine nuts and garlic are golden brown, 2 to 3 minutes. Remove with a slotted spoon.
  3. Add the broccoli rabe, ¼ cup water, and ½ teaspoon salt to the second skillet and cook, covered, until the broccoli rabe is tender, 2 to 3 minutes.
  4. Add the apricots, pine nuts, and garlic.

When cooking this meal, it takes me about 30 minutes to prepare-and only 2 skillets, so clean up is easy as well.

Halloween Decor

As a child I remember every year in the beginning of October, our parents would take down the bins of Halloween decorations from the dusty attic in the garage. My sisters and I would rummage through the spooky treasures and proudly display the gruesome decor: spiderwebs with giant eight-legged creatures, witches with larger than life warts, and ghouls and goblins galore. These days, decorating for the Autumn holiday can be just as fun...

Take a look at the following decorations from Rustic Metal Design, a team of talented artists from Turlock, CA. Matt starts
by hand cutting each letter with a plasma cutter out of a flat piece of a sixteen gauge metal sheet. Each piece is than sanded to remove any slag and soften the edges. The finished product is then sprayed in a flat durable paint specifically made for metal surfaces. Candace likes to spruce things up with hand painting the item in a fun print and/or glittering it up! If you live in the area, you can purchase goodies from Rustic Metal at the Hilmar Cheese gift shop. For everybody else, visit their shop at www.rusticmetaldesign.etsy.com

This year, I'm also in love with vintage and handmade apothecary bottles. You can dress them up with plastic spiders and bubblegum eyeballs for the holiday, then display them in their original state year round.
